Who is responsible for your information

What we collect, and why

Visits to the site

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count how many people visit, which pages are read, roughly where in the world requests come from, and which sites link to us. We need this for the ordinary reason: without it we cannot tell whether anybody is reading this, and we would be writing into a void.

Cloudflare states that Web Analytics does not use any client-side state, such as cookies or localStorage, and that they do not fingerprint individuals via their IP address, user agent, or other data for the purpose of displaying analytics. They also state that query strings are not logged, so anything after a question mark in a web address, which is where search terms usually sit, is not recorded. Those are Cloudflare's statements about their product rather than ours; we have satisfied ourselves that no cookie is set when you load this site, which you can check yourself in your browser.

Our lawful basis is legitimate interests: we have a genuine need to know whether the site is being read, the measurement does not identify you, and it does not override your interests.

If you apply to be a tester

The form asks for your email address, and optionally a name, a role, which AI client you would use, and a line about what you would use it for. We store what you type and the date you sent it. We do not store your country, your IP address or the time of day.

We use it to reply to you about tester access and for nothing else. It is not sold, not shared, and not added to a mailing list. Our lawful basis is that you have asked us to consider you for something, so we are taking steps at your request; where consent is the better description, you can withdraw it at any time by asking us to delete your application.

Stopping the form being abused

Separately from your application, and with no email address attached to it, we keep a count of how many times each internet connection has used the form today, so that one person cannot submit it hundreds of times. That counter is built by mixing your IP address with today's date and a secret key and hashing the result, so it cannot be turned back into an address, and it stops matching you once the day is over. The counter itself never stores your raw IP address; the only place that appears is in the ordinary server logs described in the next section. Our lawful basis is legitimate interests in keeping the service usable.

Ordinary server logs

The site runs on Cloudflare's network, so each request generates the ordinary technical logs any host keeps: the IP address it came from, what was asked for, and technical details of the request. Cloudflare holds these on our behalf as our processor and uses them to run the network, keep the site up, and defend it against attack. We do not use them to identify visitors, and in the normal run of things we never look at them at all. Our lawful basis is legitimate interests in operating and securing the site.

Separately, Cloudflare also processes some network data for its own purposes as an independent company, and that part is covered by Cloudflare's own privacy policy rather than this page.

Cookies

This site sets no cookies. It stores nothing in your browser. It loads no advertising script, no social media widget and no font from a third party. There is therefore nothing to ask your consent for and no cookie banner, which we regard as a feature.

Who else sees your information

Cloudflare, who host the site and provide the analytics. They are the only processor we deal with directly, and like any large host they use approved subprocessors of their own, under their data processing agreement; they publish the current list. Beyond that chain, nobody. We do not sell information, we do not share it with advertisers, and we have no advertisers.

Where your information is held

Cloudflare operates a global network, and tester applications are stored in their database service in Western Europe. Where information is transferred outside the UK, Cloudflare relies on the standard safeguards permitted by UK data protection law.

How long we keep things

Visit statistics are held by Cloudflare according to their retention for this product. They contain nothing that identifies you.

The anti-abuse counter is deleted once its day is over. To be exact about it, because it matters: the site has no clock of its own and no scheduled job, so nothing deletes anything on a timer. Later use of the form clears out old entries a few at a time. In practice they go quickly; if nobody uses the form at all, old entries sit there until somebody does. They stop matching anybody after a day regardless, because the date is part of them.

Tester applications are kept until the tester programme ends, because it is a list of people waiting to hear from us. Ask us at any point and we will delete yours.

Server logs are held by Cloudflare for as long as operating and protecting the service requires, under our agreement with them. We do not extract them or keep copies.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us to give you a copy of what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, restrict what we do with it, or object to us using it. You can also ask for it in a portable form. Email privacy@echocompendium.com and we will respond within a month.

In practice, the only thing we are likely to hold about you is a tester application, and if you ask us to delete it we will, without asking why.

If you think we have handled your information badly, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk, or on 0303 123 1113.

Children

This site is not intended for children, and we do not knowingly collect anything about them.

Changes

If we change what we collect, we will change this page, and we will change it before the code changes rather than afterwards.
